Introduction

‘Promised Land’ originates from several Asaph Music sessions recorded during 2018. A number of the themes and musical sequences that came out of these sessions were subsequently mixed down into the main tracks used for this album.

As with Anthems of Ascent and The River, all of the tracks were recorded live without prior rehearsal; being Holy Spirit inspired and entirely spontaneous improvisation. However, during the final mix down and production process, we made some musical additions where inspiration led us to do so. These additions enhanced the final mastered versions whilst always keeping within the flow and anointing of the live recording. A particular intention with the sessions that became ‘Promised Land’ was the desire to introduce drums / beats in some of the music. However, there are limitations on what can be done with one pair of hands (two pairs between us) during a live playing session! And we didn’t want the pressure to bring in drums and beats to detract from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit during our playing. Therefore, we used an arpeggiator sample at key times for the purpose of keeping our playing in time with the intention that this would be replaced with suitable drum samples / beats during the mixing down process. We have been encouraged that the sections where we did this are particularly uplifting and hope that listeners will appreciate the extra depth that the drum / beats bring when they are used.

The journey

The opening track represents the start of our journey. For those that believe in and follow Jesus our names are known in Heaven and written in the Lambs book of life! (“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect” [Heb. 12:22-23]).

Restoration

This track speaks of the restoring power of our Lord Jesus Christ! Starting reflectively, it builds to a joyful conclusion as our souls and spirits are revived, refreshed and restored by Him. As described in the Introduction notes above, this is a track where we specifically intended to replace an arpeggiator sound with drums / beats during the mixing down process. The addition of a bass line, played on bass guitar, was also made during the mixing down process.

By still waters

This track is inspired by Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.” Towards the end of the track the drums / beats enter in joyful recognition that we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever! (Psalm 23v6).

Lost in wonder

Many times, we our lost in the wonder of Him. Sometimes this comes when we are out walking enjoying His creation and sometimes just in worshipping Him! This track reminds us of those times. We added the birds singing at the start of this track as a reminder of the beauty of His creation. Rest in His all-encompassing love as you listen and meditate on His limitless wonder…

From the heart

On our Anthems of Ascent album there is a track (My Lord and my God) unique amongst the others in being solo piano. The same thing happened for this track (except this time it was the alternate player), played from the heart.

Eve of battle

This track has a very different musical theme. It seems to suggest a coming conflict but a battle where, with the Lord as Captain of the Hosts, we will be victorious!

Dawn of the King

After the battle is over, the King reigns over the land. Anyone who has been listening to Asaph Music for any time might have spotted the we like the Uillean pipes! This fantastic instrument, primarily used in Irish folk music, sounds a regal anthem announcing the Dawn of the King!

Peace like a river

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4, v6-7)

Promised Land

The final track speaks of the Lord’s faithfulness and the completion of our journey as we arrive at The Promised Land to live forever with Him! The trumpet near the beginning of the track was added during the mixing down process as a particular inspiration to the orchestration of the track. In addition, we added drums / beats in a number of places throughout.
